In My Queue

By: Joe Medearis

In my queue this week was Persepolis a film based on two graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi. This film serves as an autobiography of young Marjane. This is no normal child, Marjane happened to be nine years old when "The Islamic Revolution" swept across Iran. It tells of her struggle to understand the politics of the "revolution" and of how she dealt with the many subsequent losses that touched her life. Her journey is one that is dominated by the struggle between her love of Allah and her distrust of the extreme form of Islam that came to power in the Iran of the 1980's. Some of the most interesting scenes in the movie are the ones which depict Marjane's conversations with Allah. This depiction of Allah is of course quite controversial. Marjane's struggles are both heartbreaking and empowering. I would encourage everyone to see this movie and to read the graphic novels. Tune in next week as we take a look at George Clooney's 2002 film Solaris.
