What do you think these words have to do with seminary life? With faith? With God?
We think they have everything to do with seminary, faith, God, and what it means to be a leader in ministry. They are some of the biggest words/questions in church and society today, so it’s important that we’re prepared to engage them faithfully.
Acts 10:15 is a student group at McCormick that aims to explore just such questions. Acts 10:15 is McCormick’s LGBTQA (that’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and allies) concerns. We focus on support, education, awareness, visibility, discussion, and partnership around LGBTQ concerns. We’re also interested in the ways that questions about sexuality intersect with questions about race, gender, and culture. And, beyond all, we’re interested in how this all connects to our faith, call, and God.
Please join us as we explore these questions! Our first meeting of the academic year will be this coming Tuesday, September 6th at 9:15pm (that’s right after PIF) in apartment 304 of the 1400 E. 57th Street building. We will meet each other, catch up, and look ahead to the new year with Acts 10:15. We welcome all to this meeting, whether you’ve been before or not, or whether you’re sure about this Acts 10:15 thing or not. If you can’t make it but would like to learn more, please be in touch with me! My email is tnolan@go.mccormick.edu.
We’ve hosted a number of group and community events around these interests in the past. We’ve held a series of community conversations called Open Table: Conversations about Faith and Sexuality. We’ve hosted guest speakers and taken group trips to conferences. We’ve also created an annual week of events related to LGBTQ concerns every year, called Speak Week. We’ve gathered as a small group, too, to talk about our concerns, prayers, and hopes – as well as our questions about the Bible, faith, marriage, and ordination.
This year, we’ll continue to do similar events, as well as our annual Speak Week. We’ll also look to new conversations, like questions about transgender concerns and about the intersection of race and sexuality. Ultimately, though, Acts 10:15 will be what you want it to be – so come to our first meeting or be in touch with your ideas, hopes, and dreams for the year.
We’re also very interested in partnering with other student groups and centers to co-host events and conversations. We want to think together about the ways questions about sexuality intersects with other questions, like those about race and anti-racism, gender, class, culture, nation, and spirituality. So, if you’re involved in another group and want to talk about ways we might partner, please be in touch!
Don’t hesitate to be in touch and find out more about Acts 10:15. Engage your questions and build deep community with us…See you Tuesday!
