Christ Jesus,
Life is complicated. We read of children and teenagers being shot in our streets. We watch loved ones suffer, struggle, and lose to injury and illness. We watch our politicians and nation toil to negotiate how to move forward in such uncertain and confusing times. We live in a world torn apart by war, hunger, oppression, greed, injustice—where each day results in more people dead and sometimes what seems like little hope.
So, sometimes all it seems we can do is throw up our hands in frustration. It’s complicated. Yes, life is complicated. You know that only too well. Holy Week—the culmination of your earthly life—was complicated. You ride in on Sunday on a donkey. It’s all parades, shouts and waving palm branches. By later in the week, you’re having a somber yet meaningful meal with your closest friends. On the tail of that, you’re predicting betrayal and denial. By Friday, religious and political officials have tried you and the mob is yelling, “Kill him! Kill him!” And then you’re dead and it seems that love, hope and life are forever gone—though miraculously, all is wonderfully restored on Easter.
Oh Christ, life is complicated. Sometimes it hurts so much and is profoundly heartbreaking. Yet, if we pay attention this Holy Week, we’ll realize that you have a deep understanding of the highs and lows, the joys and pains. Walk with us in this complicated life for you know the way.
Amen.
